Trou exists for one reason: to make buying things less of a gamble. We read the spec sheets, sift through the hype, and tell you plainly what’s great, what’s mediocre and what’s not worth your money.
Why “Trou”?
In French, trou means “hole” — as in the rabbit hole you fall into at midnight with 27 browser tabs open, trying to decide between two nearly identical pairs of earbuds. We go down that hole so you don’t have to, and come back up with a clear answer.
What we cover
We focus on the everyday gear people actually buy online: headphones and speakers, home audio, kitchen appliances, gaming accessories, smart-home devices, computer and phone accessories, and the occasional deal worth jumping on during Prime Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If it lives on your desk, in your kitchen or in your bag, it’s fair game.
What we believe
- Cons are content.Every product has trade-offs. A review without a cons list isn’t a review — it’s an ad. Ours always include both.
- Plain English wins. You shouldn’t need an engineering degree to understand what “40mm dynamic drivers” means for your commute. We translate specs into real-world impact.
- Independence is non-negotiable.Brands don’t preview, edit or approve our reviews. We never accept payment in exchange for a positive verdict.
- Your time matters.Key features, pros, cons and a price check sit right at the top, so you can decide in a minute — or read on for the full story.
How we review
Every review starts with research: manufacturer specifications, independent measurements where they exist, long-term owner reports and a close read of verified buyer feedback to spot patterns — the battery that fades after six months, the hinge that cracks, the app that never gets updated. We then weigh how a product fits into real routines and how it stacks up against its closest competitors at the same price.
We update reviews when prices shift dramatically, when a newer model replaces an old one, or when readers tell us something we missed.
How we make money
Trou is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site — mostly to Amazon — we may earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. That’s what keeps the lights on and the site free of paywalls. Commissions never influence which products we recommend or how we rate them; you can read the full details in our Affiliate Disclaimer.
Who’s behind Trou
Trou is run by Mickey Freeman, a lifelong gadget tinkerer who has spent far too many evenings comparing product pages so friends and family didn’t have to. What started as long text messages answering “which one should I buy?” became this site.
